Business Term

Threads keep high-traffic channels readable by collapsing extended conversations into a side panel. Without threads, every reply to a message scrolls the channel for all members, even those not involved in the sub-discussion. Threading is a discipline as much as a feature: teams that consistently use it end up with channel timelines that tell a clean story, not a wall of interleaved replies.

How Thread Works in Zoho Cliq

In Zoho Cliq, a Thread is started by clicking the reply option on any existing message. Subsequent replies appear in a side panel attached to the original message rather than in the main channel feed. The channel shows only a summary indicator that a thread exists and how many replies it has. All thread participants are notified of new replies. Threads work in channels and in group Direct Messages.

When to Use Thread

Use a Thread whenever a message prompts a detailed back-and-forth that only some channel members need to follow, such as a technical discussion about a bug report, a debate about a proposal, or follow-up questions on an announcement. Reply in the main channel only for brief acknowledgements that are genuinely relevant to everyone. Teams that ignore threading often end up creating separate channels for discussions that could have lived in one place with proper threading.

Key Considerations for Thread

Threads in Zoho Cliq are not the same as starting a new channel; they are ephemeral conversations tied to a single message. If a threaded discussion reveals a topic that needs permanent tracking or a dedicated space, consider creating a new channel or capturing the decision in a separate tool. Be aware that users who join a channel after a thread was started may not immediately notice that an important discussion happened in a thread versus the main feed.

India Example: A Pune manufacturing firm’s project manager posts a production schedule update in the #projects channel. Rather than 15 engineers each asking questions directly in the channel, the manager asks everyone to use the Thread to post clarifying questions. The main channel remains readable while the detailed Q&A stays contained.
Do all channel members see replies posted inside a Thread in Zoho Cliq?

Only members who have interacted with the thread, either by starting it or replying to it, receive notifications for new thread replies by default. Other channel members see a thread indicator on the original message but are not notified of each reply. This is precisely the behaviour that keeps channels from becoming noisy when detailed sub-discussions are happening in threads.

Can you search the content of Threads in Zoho Cliq?

Yes. Thread messages are indexed and included in Cliq’s global search just like regular channel messages. You can search by keyword and filter results to a specific channel. If a thread contains an important decision or piece of information, it will surface in search results even though it is collapsed in the main channel view.
