A Channel in Zoho Cliq is a named, persistent group chat space organised around a topic, project, or team. Members are added by the channel admin or can join public channels themselves. All messages, files, and threads posted in a channel are stored and searchable by members. Channels can be public (visible to anyone in the organisation) or private (invite-only), and they live as long as the organisation needs them.
Use a Channel whenever communication needs to persist beyond a single exchange and more than two people are involved, for example a project team, a department, or a cross-functional group. Channels are the right choice for ongoing topics: product feedback, client deliverables, or support escalations. Avoid channels for genuinely one-off, two-person exchanges; a Direct Message is more appropriate there and keeps channel feeds clean.
Channel names should be descriptive and follow a naming convention your organisation agrees on upfront, because renaming later can confuse members who have bookmarked notifications. Private channels are not discoverable in search by non-members, so inform intended participants directly. Archiving a channel preserves history but stops new messages. Check your Zoho Cliq plan for any limits on the number of channels or message retention period.
A public channel is listed in the organisation’s channel directory and any member can join without an invitation. A private channel does not appear in the directory; membership is controlled by the channel admin. Both types offer the same messaging features, but only private channels are suitable for sensitive or restricted discussions.
Yes. All messages and files posted in a channel are indexed and searchable by any current member of that channel. You can filter search results by channel, date range, or sender. Archived channels retain their history and remain searchable, though no new messages can be posted to them.
