A Cadence Step in Zoho CRM is a single scheduled touch point within a Cadence outreach sequence. Each step has a type (email, call, or task), a day number indicating when it occurs relative to the Cadence start or the previous step, and the content or instructions for that touch point.

Types of Cadence Steps

Three step types are available. An Email Step sends a pre-written email automatically on the scheduled day. A Call Step creates a task reminding the rep to make a phone call on that day, with optional call script notes. A Task Step creates a custom task – for example, “Send LinkedIn message” or “Share whitepaper” – that the rep must complete manually.

The day offset for each step is relative to the previous step, allowing for flexible spacing – for example, Step 1 on Day 0, Step 2 on Day 3, Step 3 on Day 5, and so on.

Industry Example

IT Services: A managed IT services company designs their Cadence with 7 steps. Step 1 (Day 0): automated email introducing the company. Step 2 (Day 2): call task. Step 3 (Day 4): email with a case study. Step 4 (Day 7): task to share a LinkedIn post. Step 5 (Day 10): follow-up email. Step 6 (Day 14): call task with the goal of booking a discovery call. Step 7 (Day 18): final email. The sequence runs for 18 days and covers email, phone, and social channels.
