SCORM (Learn)

SCORM in Zoho Learn is the standard for importing and running packaged e-learning content created in external authoring tools, allowing Zoho Learn to

Technical Term

SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) is a specification, not a file type: a SCORM package is a ZIP archive containing HTML, media, and a manifest file that tells an LMS how to launch and track the content. Zoho Learn acts as the LMS runtime; the package defines the learning experience. This separation means you can migrate SCORM content between LMS platforms without rebuilding it.

How SCORM Works in Zoho Learn

SCORM content is created in external authoring tools such as Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, or iSpring, and exported as a SCORM 1.2 or SCORM 2004 ZIP package. In Zoho Learn, this package is uploaded as a lesson type within a course module. When a learner launches the SCORM lesson, Zoho Learn opens it in a player and receives tracking data back from the package: whether the learner completed it, their score on any embedded quiz, and the time spent. This data feeds into Zoho Learn’s progress tracking and completion reporting.

When to Use SCORM

Use SCORM when you have existing e-learning content built in an authoring tool that would be expensive or time-consuming to rebuild natively in Zoho Learn, or when you need rich interactive content (branching scenarios, simulations, or animated assessments) that Zoho Learn’s native lesson editor does not support. SCORM is also appropriate when you need to move content between LMS platforms without rebuilding. For simple text and video lessons, use Zoho Learn’s native lesson types rather than SCORM, as they are easier to update and do not require an external authoring tool.

Key Considerations for SCORM

Zoho Learn supports SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004; confirm which version your authoring tool exports and test a package in Zoho Learn before committing a full content library. Large SCORM packages with many media files may have upload size limits; check the current limit in your Zoho Learn plan. SCORM packages are opaque to Zoho Learn’s native reporting beyond the data the package chooses to report (completion status and score); detailed question-level analytics require the authoring tool’s own reporting features or xAPI if supported. Always test SCORM packages in your target browser before publishing to learners.

India Example: A Pune pharmaceutical company has a 45-module GMP compliance course built in Articulate Storyline for regulatory training. Rather than rebuilding it in Zoho Learn, they export each module as a SCORM 1.2 package and upload them to a Zoho Learn course. Learner completion data flows back to Zoho Learn for reporting to their quality assurance team.
What is the difference between SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004 in Zoho Learn?

SCORM 1.2 is the older, more widely supported version and is the safest choice for compatibility. SCORM 2004 introduced more granular completion statuses and sequencing options but is less universally supported by authoring tools and LMS platforms. If you are not using advanced sequencing features, export as SCORM 1.2 to minimise compatibility issues with Zoho Learn and any future LMS migrations.

Can SCORM content in Zoho Learn be updated without re-enrolling learners?

Updating a SCORM package typically requires uploading a new version of the ZIP file to Zoho Learn. Depending on how the update is handled, learners who have already completed the old version may retain their completion status, or may be required to retake the lesson. Test the update process in a non-production course first to confirm how Zoho Learn handles version changes for existing enrolments before updating a live course.
