Administrators add aliases from the Zoho Mail control panel under the user’s account settings. An alias can share the same domain as the primary address or a different verified domain in the organisation. Mail sent to the alias is delivered directly to the user’s primary inbox. The user can choose which address to display as the sender when composing a reply, giving flexibility to respond from either the alias or the primary address.
Aliases are useful when a single person handles multiple roles or when a business address such as info@, billing@, or sales@ should route to a specific staff member. A founder who also manages accounts can have founder@company.in as the primary mailbox and accounts@company.in as an alias, keeping both addresses active without paying for a second mailbox. Aliases are also used during domain migrations to maintain continuity on the old address while transitioning to a new one.
Aliases do not have separate storage; all mail arrives in the primary mailbox’s quota. If the primary mailbox reaches its storage limit, mail to the alias will also be rejected. The number of aliases per user depends on the Zoho Mail plan. Aliases cannot be shared between multiple users; for shared team addresses use a Distribution List or Shared Mailbox instead.
A freelance tax consultant in Hyderabad had one Zoho Mail mailbox but served clients under two different business names. She added a second alias for her newer practice name on the same domain. Both addresses appeared professional to clients, but she managed everything from a single inbox without paying for a second account, saving approximately INR 900 per year.
Yes. Once an alias is set up, you can select it as the From address when composing a new message. This lets the recipient see the alias address as the sender rather than your primary mailbox address.
The number of aliases per user varies by plan. On the Mail Lite plan, each user can have up to 5 aliases. Higher plans allow more. Check the current plan limits in the Zoho Mail pricing page or the admin control panel.
