Catch-all Address

A Catch-all Address in Zoho Mail is a mailbox configured to receive any email sent to your domain that does not match an existing user address, preventing messages from bouncing.

Setting

A Catch-all Address in Zoho Mail is a designated mailbox that automatically receives any email addressed to your domain at an address that does not exist, so messages sent to misspelled or retired addresses are captured rather than returned to the sender with a bounce error.

How Catch-all Address Works in Zoho Mail

An administrator enables the catch-all setting from the Zoho Mail admin console under domain settings and points it to an existing mailbox. From that point, any message sent to @yourdomain.in that does not match a valid user address, alias, or distribution list is delivered to the catch-all mailbox. The catch-all mailbox owner can then review these messages to identify misaddressed genuine contacts and respond accordingly.

When to Use Catch-all Address

A catch-all is useful during a domain migration when some contacts may still have old or slightly incorrect address formats. It also helps when a business has previously used multiple address variations in printed materials or older websites and wants to ensure none of those messages are lost. Small organisations where staff use a single general inquiry address also benefit from a catch-all to catch any variants of that address that external parties might type.

Key Considerations

A catch-all address attracts a high volume of spam because spammers routinely send to randomly guessed addresses at domains known to have catch-all enabled. The catch-all mailbox can fill quickly, so set up aggressive spam filtering and schedule regular reviews. Some organisations enable the catch-all only during a transition period and then disable it once the migration is complete and old address usage drops off.

India Example

A Pune-based manufacturer rebranded and changed their domain from an older .net to a new .in address. During the three months while old business cards were still in circulation, they enabled a catch-all on the new domain pointing to the admin’s mailbox. Several important inquiries from dealers who had typed the old address format were captured and responded to promptly, with no lost business during the transition.

Will enabling a catch-all address increase the spam in that mailbox?

Yes, significantly. Spammers send messages to thousands of randomly generated addresses, and a catch-all collects all of them. Use Zoho Mail’s spam filter settings and create email filters to move obvious spam away from the primary inbox of the catch-all mailbox.

Can I set up a catch-all on a subdomain in Zoho Mail?

Yes. If you have added a subdomain such as support.company.in as a verified domain in Zoho Mail, you can configure a separate catch-all address for that subdomain independent of the catch-all on your primary domain.
