Zoho Sprints generates the burndown chart automatically when a sprint is active. The vertical axis shows total remaining story points and the horizontal axis shows sprint days. A grey ideal line runs from the total points on day one to zero on the last day. The actual line updates each day based on stories moved to Done. A flat actual line for multiple consecutive days indicates blocked work, while a line above the ideal signals the sprint is at risk.
Scrum masters review the burndown chart during daily standups to check whether the sprint is progressing as planned. It is also shared with project managers or clients who want a quick visual status update without reading through individual story cards. Teams can also compare burndown shapes across sprints to detect recurring patterns, such as a slow start followed by a rush in the final two days.
The burndown only shows progress accurately if story point estimates are set before the sprint starts and not changed during the sprint. Adding stories mid-sprint causes the remaining points to rise, making the chart harder to read. In Zoho Sprints the chart resets if the sprint is extended, so changing end dates should be done with care.
A Chennai software team starts a two-week sprint with 48 story points. By day six the burndown chart shows 36 points remaining, while the ideal line shows 24 points should be done by now. The scrum master spots the gap in the morning standup and the team identifies two stories blocked on a third-party API integration from a Bengaluru vendor. The blocker is escalated the same day.
A flat line means no stories were completed during that period. Common causes include work in progress on large stories that are not yet done, external blockers, or team members working on tasks not captured as sprint stories. Use the scrum board to identify which cards have not moved and address the cause in the standup.
Zoho Sprints can track time logged against tasks, and the burndown can be configured to show remaining hours if the team logs time diligently. However, most agile practitioners prefer story points for the burndown because hours create the impression of precise tracking that story-based work does not warrant.
