Cohort Analysis in Zoho Analytics is the process of grouping users, customers, or transactions by a shared characteristic or event date and measuring how a specific metric evolves for each group over subsequent time periods.
Use Cohort Analysis when your reporting or data needs go beyond standard defaults. This feature suits organisations working with multiple data sources, varied user groups, or specific business logic. Always confirm with your Workspace Administrator before making changes that affect shared reports used by other teams.
Ensure underlying tables are clean and consistently structured before configuring Cohort Analysis. Test on a duplicate report before applying changes to production dashboards. For high-traffic workspaces, schedule configuration changes during off-peak hours to avoid disrupting active users.
Cohort Analysis groups entities by a common starting attribute, typically the period they first appeared (first purchase month, signup month, etc.), and tracks how a chosen metric changes for each group over time. It answers questions like: do customers acquired in Q1 retain better than those acquired in Q3?
Use the Cohort Report type in the report editor. Set the cohort dimension as your group-by date column (e.g., signup month), set the period dimension as the elapsed time column (months since signup), and set the metric as the value to measure. Zoho Analytics builds the cohort matrix automatically.
