Conveyance Allowance

Conveyance Allowance in Zoho Payroll is a monthly earning component paid to employees for commuting costs. Under the old tax regime, up to Rs 1,600 per month is exempt from income tax.

Conveyance Allowance in Zoho Payroll is a salary component paid to employees to meet the cost of daily travel between home and office. Under the old income tax regime, a maximum of Rs 1,600 per month (Rs 19,200 per year) is exempt from tax without requiring any bills or proof. Amounts above this limit are fully taxable. Under the new tax regime, no such exemption is available.

Tax Exemption Under Old Regime

For employees who choose the old tax regime and have Conveyance Allowance configured in their salary structure, Zoho Payroll automatically applies a monthly exemption of Rs 1,600 when computing taxable income for TDS. The taxable portion (amount above Rs 1,600) is included in monthly TDS computation. No reimbursement claim or bill submission is required for this exemption.

Conveyance Allowance vs Transport Allowance

These two terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but they have different contexts. Conveyance Allowance is a salary component for commuting. Transport Allowance (Sec 10(14)) has its own rules for physically handicapped employees. Zoho Payroll supports both as separate components with distinct tax treatments.

Conveyance Under the New Tax Regime

Employees who opt for the new income tax regime cannot claim the Rs 1,600 monthly exemption. Zoho Payroll handles this by checking the regime selected in the employee’s investment declaration. If new regime is selected, the full Conveyance Allowance is treated as taxable income in TDS computation.

Example: An employee’s salary structure includes Conveyance Allowance of Rs 2,000 per month under the old regime. Zoho Payroll exempts Rs 1,600 and treats Rs 400 as taxable income, adding it to the monthly TDS computation. If the same employee switches to the new regime, the full Rs 2,000 becomes taxable.
