An Email Template Merge Tag in Zoho CRM is a placeholder in an email template that is dynamically replaced with the actual field value from the CRM record when the email is sent. Merge tags allow a single template to produce personalised emails for every recipient without manual editing.

Merge Tag Syntax

Merge tags follow the pattern $module.Field_Name. For a Leads module template, the sender’s first name would be $leads.First_Name and the company would be $leads.Company. For a Deals template, the deal name would be $deals.Deal_Name. Custom fields follow the same pattern using the field’s API name.

Special merge tags include $org.Organization_Name for the CRM organisation name, $user.Full_Name for the sending user’s name, and $user.Signature for the email signature set in user preferences.

Industry Example

B2B Sales: A Zoho CRM email template for a discovery call confirmation uses merge tags: “Hi $leads.First_Name, Thank you for your interest in Zoho CRM. I have scheduled a discovery call for $activities.Activity_Date at $activities.Activity_Time. Looking forward to speaking with you. Regards, $user.Full_Name, $user.Title”. Every rep using this template sends a correctly personalised confirmation in one click.
