What Is WorkDrive Writer?

WorkDrive Writer is Zoho WorkDrive’s integrated word processing tool. It allows users to create and edit text documents directly within the WorkDrive interface, supporting rich formatting, tables, images, headers, and a range of document styling options. Documents created in WorkDrive Writer are saved natively in WorkDrive and support real-time co-editing, version history, and all WorkDrive sharing features.

Key Features of WorkDrive Writer

WorkDrive Writer includes standard word processing features such as paragraph styles, page layout controls, track changes, review mode, and comments. It also supports export to common formats including DOCX, PDF, and ODT. Documents can be opened and edited in Writer directly from email attachments or uploaded files, and Microsoft Word (.docx) files can be edited natively without conversion.

WorkDrive Writer vs. Zoho Writer

WorkDrive Writer and the standalone Zoho Writer product share the same underlying editor, but WorkDrive Writer is accessed from within the WorkDrive file management environment. Files created in WorkDrive Writer are stored in WorkDrive folders and governed by the folder’s permission settings, while Zoho Writer as a standalone tool has its own document management system. For teams already using WorkDrive, creating documents in WorkDrive Writer keeps everything in one place.

Can I open a Microsoft Word file directly in WorkDrive Writer?

Yes. Zoho WorkDrive can open .docx files in WorkDrive Writer for editing. The formatting fidelity is very high for standard Word documents. Complex files with extensive macros, custom styles, or advanced Word features may not render perfectly, but for standard business documents, you can edit Word files without downloading them or using a separate application.

Are documents saved automatically in WorkDrive Writer?

Yes. WorkDrive Writer saves changes automatically as you type, similar to other cloud word processors. There is no need to press a save button. Each save creates a new version in the version history, so you can always return to earlier states of the document even if you make significant changes without manually saving a copy first.
