Story points in Zoho Projects are a unit for estimating the relative effort required to complete a task. Rather than estimating in hours, teams assign story point values (commonly using a Fibonacci sequence: 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13) based on the task’s complexity, uncertainty, and effort relative to other tasks.
Hour estimates are unreliable in agile projects because different team members work at different speeds, tasks often take longer than expected, and the estimation process becomes an argument about time rather than complexity. Story points abstract away individual velocity differences and focus the team on relative sizing.
Teams typically establish a reference task valued at 1 story point (a trivial task everyone understands) and estimate all other tasks relative to it. Over time, the team’s velocity (story points per sprint) stabilises and becomes a reliable planning tool.
