Serial Number Tracking

A method of tracking individual units of an item in Zoho Inventory using unique serial numbers assigned at receipt and traced through sale.

What Is Serial Number Tracking?

Serial number tracking in Zoho Inventory assigns a unique identifier to each physical unit of an item. Unlike batch tracking which groups units, serial tracking is one-to-one: each unit gets its own serial number. This enables full traceability from vendor to end customer.

How It Works

When you receive items on a purchase order, you assign serial numbers to each unit. When fulfilling a sales order, the system asks which specific serial numbers are being shipped. This creates a chain of custody from purchase receipt to customer delivery.

When to Use Serial Tracking

Serial tracking is essential for high-value items like electronics, medical devices, and machinery where warranty management, post-sale service, and regulatory compliance require individual unit traceability. It is not practical for low-value, high-volume items.
