Rating Scale

A Rating Scale in Zoho People is the defined set of performance score values used in appraisals — such as a 1 to 5 scale or a label-based scale (Exceptional, Meets Expectations, Below Expectations) — that standardises how performance is measured and compared across the organisation.

What is a Rating Scale in Zoho People?

A Rating Scale provides the vocabulary for performance evaluation. Without a standardised scale, one manager’s ‘Good’ might be another’s ‘Average’, making cross-organisation performance comparison impossible. Zoho People lets HR define a single rating scale that all appraisals use, ensuring consistent meaning across departments and managers.

Common rating scale formats

  • Numeric: 1 to 5, or 1 to 10. Simple and easy to aggregate into averages.
  • Label-based: Exceptional, Exceeds Expectations, Meets Expectations, Below Expectations, Unsatisfactory. More descriptive but harder to aggregate.
  • Percentage: 0% to 100% achievement against target. Precise for quantitative KPIs.

Rating Scale and bell curve

The Rating Scale feeds directly into the Performance Bell Curve and normalisation process. HR uses the scale distribution across all employees to identify where inflation is occurring and apply calibration to bring distributions in line with the organisational policy.
