GST treatment in Zoho Books is the classification assigned to each customer or vendor that determines how GST is calculated and reported on transactions with that contact, based on their GST registration status under Indian law.

GST Treatment Options in Zoho Books

Zoho Books provides six GST treatment categories. Registered Regular covers fully registered businesses under the regular GST scheme; transactions with them follow standard GST rules with CGST/SGST or IGST applied. Registered Composition covers businesses under the composition scheme; they cannot claim ITC and have different invoice requirements. Unregistered applies to businesses that should be registered but are not; reverse charge may apply in certain cases. Consumer applies to individual end consumers (B2C transactions) where no GSTIN is required. SEZ (Special Economic Zone) attracts zero-rated treatment. Overseas applies to export customers and import vendors.

How GST Treatment Affects Invoices

The GST treatment on a customer record determines the invoice format and the GSTR-1 section where the transaction is reported. B2B transactions (Registered Regular) are reported in the B2B section of GSTR-1 with the customer’s GSTIN. B2C transactions (Consumer) are reported in the B2C Large or B2C Others section depending on the invoice amount. Exports go to the Export section. Getting the treatment right is critical because GSTR-1 sections cannot be changed after filing without an amendment.

Updating GST Treatment in Zoho Books

If a customer’s GST status changes (for example, they register for GST after previously being listed as Unregistered), update their GST treatment in the Zoho Books contact record immediately. All future invoices will use the new treatment. Past invoices that used the old treatment may need amendment in your GSTR-1 if the GST calculation was different, for example if reverse charge was applied under the old Unregistered treatment and should no longer apply.

Industry: B2B Services — A Pune HR consulting firm updates a client from “Unregistered” to “Registered Regular” in Zoho Books after the client obtains their GSTIN. The first invoice after the update correctly shows the customer’s GSTIN, is classified as a B2B transaction, and appears in the B2B section of GSTR-1 rather than the B2C section.
