A Field Rule is configured in the Rules section of the Zoho Forms builder. Each rule specifies a trigger condition (for example: when a Dropdown field equals “Yes”) and one or more actions targeting a specific field (show, hide, mark as required, or set a value). Multiple conditions can be joined with AND or OR logic. A single rule can affect multiple fields simultaneously. Field Rules evaluate whenever the triggering field changes value, providing instant feedback to the respondent.
Use Field Rules when you need precise control over individual fields rather than entire pages. A practical case: a checkbox labelled “Add billing address” should reveal a set of address fields below it only when ticked. Another case: a numeric quantity field that becomes required only when a product category is selected. Field Rules are also used to set calculated values in number or formula fields when another field’s value changes. Combine them with page rules only when both levels of control are genuinely needed.
Field Rules execute in the order listed; if two rules affect the same field with conflicting actions, the later rule in the list takes effect. Rules are evaluated client-side, so they depend on JavaScript being active. Setting a field value via a rule does not prevent the respondent from overwriting it unless you also hide the field. Debugging complex rule chains is easier if you assign clear labels to each rule in the builder, as Zoho Forms lets you name individual rules for reference.
In Zoho Forms, the Rules builder handles both field-level actions and page-level navigation. A Field Rule targets a specific field, controlling its visibility, required status, or value. Page-skip rules control which page the respondent navigates to next. Both are configured in the same interface but produce different types of actions. The term “Conditional Logic” often refers to the overall system covering both types.
Yes. One of the available actions in a Zoho Forms Field Rule is to set the value of a target field to a predefined text or number. For example, when a respondent selects a particular service tier, a hidden price field can be automatically set to the corresponding rate. The respondent does not need to enter the value manually, and the field can be hidden so they do not see it.
