Zoho Billing handles the plan transition and calculates any proration adjustments for the mid-cycle change.
Unlike upgrades (which are often applied immediately), downgrades in Zoho Billing are frequently configured to take effect at the end of the current billing cycle. This prevents customers from accessing a higher-tier plan for the full month and then retroactively downgrading for a refund. The customer continues on their current plan until renewal, then moves to the lower-tier plan at the start of the next cycle.
A downgrade retains the customer on a paid subscription at a lower price point, while a cancellation ends the subscription entirely. Offering a downgrade option as an alternative to cancellation is a common retention tactic: a customer who was going to cancel might stay on if they can reduce costs. Zoho Billing supports configuring a retention flow that presents downgrade options before processing a cancellation request.
Whether a downgrade generates a credit depends on your proration settings and whether the downgrade is immediate or end-of-cycle. An immediate downgrade with proration enabled generates a credit for the difference between the higher plan’s remaining days and the lower plan’s remaining days. An end-of-cycle downgrade does not generate a credit since the customer uses the paid period fully before the lower plan takes effect.
Yes. You can schedule a downgrade to take effect on a future date, such as the subscription’s next renewal date. Zoho Billing will automatically apply the plan change on the scheduled date without requiring any manual action at the time. This is useful for customers who request a downgrade mid-cycle but should continue on the current plan until their paid period ends.
