Designation is the formal job title that describes an employee’s role and level within the organisation. In Zoho People, designations are managed as a master list so that naming is consistent across the organisation — every senior engineer carries exactly the same designation string rather than ad-hoc variations.
A designation is the public-facing job title. Organisations may also use job bands or grades (L4, L5, Senior, Principal) internally to manage compensation and career progression. Both can be tracked in Zoho People: designation for the official title and a custom field for the internal band or grade.
The designation appears on the employee’s org chart node and on their public profile visible to colleagues. HR reports can be grouped by designation to understand headcount distribution across roles, identify role concentration risks, or plan for succession.
