Zoho Billing offers two types of coupon discounts. A percentage coupon reduces the subscription price by a defined percentage, for example, 20% off the monthly plan price. A flat amount coupon reduces the invoice by a specific monetary value, for example, INR 500 off regardless of the plan price. The right type depends on the discount strategy and whether the reduction should scale with the plan price.
Percentage coupons work well for promotions where the discount should scale proportionally across different plan tiers. A 25% off offer is equally fair to both a basic plan and an enterprise plan customer. Flat amount coupons are better for specific promotional offers, referral credits, or situations where you want to give a fixed value discount regardless of the customer’s plan size. They are also simpler for customers to understand.
Both coupon types appear as a discount line item on the customer’s invoice in Zoho Billing, showing the original plan amount and the discount applied. For percentage coupons, the invoice shows the percentage and the calculated amount. For flat amount coupons, only the discount amount is shown. Clear invoice presentation helps customers understand what they are paying and why.
Zoho Billing handles flat amount coupons that exceed the invoice total by generating a zero-value invoice (no charge) for that billing cycle. Any excess coupon value beyond the invoice total may either be forfeited or carried forward as a credit balance depending on your Zoho Billing configuration and coupon settings.
You cannot change the type of an existing coupon in Zoho Billing. However, you can remove the existing coupon from the subscription and apply a new one of the correct type. The subscription will be charged correctly from the next billing cycle based on the newly applied coupon.
