Compensatory Off (Comp Off) is a leave credit given when an employee works on a day they were not expected to — a public holiday, a weekend, or a roster day off. Instead of receiving overtime pay, they receive an equivalent day of leave to take at a mutually agreed future date.
In Zoho People, an employee submits a Comp Off request documenting that they worked on a specific holiday. Once approved by the manager, the leave credit is added to their Comp Off leave balance, which they can then apply against a future leave request.
Most organisations place an expiry on Comp Off credits to prevent accumulation: for example, Comp Off earned must be taken within 60 days of the work date. Zoho People can be configured to automatically lapse expired Comp Off credits and notify the employee before expiry.
Comp Off and overtime address the same underlying situation — work beyond scheduled hours — but differently: comp off replaces the extra time with equivalent leave; overtime compensates with additional monetary pay. The choice depends on organisation policy and the employee’s preference where both options are offered.
