Baseline

A saved snapshot of the original project schedule in Zoho Projects against which actual progress is compared to measure variance.

What Is a Baseline in Zoho Projects?

A baseline in Zoho Projects is a frozen snapshot of the project plan taken at a specific point, typically at project kickoff after the plan is agreed. The baseline records the planned start dates, end dates, and durations for every task. As the project progresses, actual dates are compared against baseline dates to measure schedule variance.

Setting a Baseline

Go to the Gantt chart view in Zoho Projects and select the option to set a baseline. You can save multiple baselines if the project scope changes significantly (re-baselining), though each new baseline should be documented with a justification.

Variance Analysis

Baseline comparison reveals whether tasks are starting later than planned, finishing later, or ahead of schedule. Consistent slippage on certain task types (e.g., client review tasks) points to systemic planning assumptions that need correction in future project templates.
