Asset Category

An Asset Category in Zoho FSM is a classification label for assets, grouping equipment of the same type to enable filtered reporting, bulk maintenance scheduling, and skill-based routing.

What Is an Asset Category in Zoho FSM?

An Asset Category is a classification that groups similar assets together in Zoho FSM. Categories such as HVAC Systems, Electrical Panels, Elevators, or Industrial Pumps allow service managers to filter reports by equipment type, apply category-level maintenance schedules, and configure routing rules that assign jobs for each category to agents with the matching skill. Without categories, managing a large and diverse asset base becomes difficult to organise.

Asset Categories and Maintenance Planning

Preventive maintenance schedules in FSM can be configured at the category level. Setting a 6-month service interval for all assets in the HVAC Systems category automatically generates Work Orders for every asset in that category at the correct intervals, without requiring each asset to be individually configured. This makes category assignment at the time of asset creation a critical step in any FSM deployment.

Reporting by Asset Category

FSM reports filtered by Asset Category reveal which equipment types generate the most service calls, have the highest first-time fix rates, or consume the most parts. This data guides decisions about which categories need more skilled technicians, which products have poor reliability that might be raised with the manufacturer, and which categories are the most profitable to service.

Can Asset Categories in Zoho FSM be linked to required Skill sets?

Yes. Asset Categories can be associated with required skills so that any Work Order created for an asset in that category automatically inherits the skill requirements. For example, all assets in the High-Voltage Electrical category can require an Electrical Safety certification, ensuring only certified technicians are dispatched for that equipment without dispatcher intervention.

How granular should Asset Categories be in Zoho FSM?

Categories should be granular enough to be meaningful for routing and reporting but not so granular that they become difficult to manage. A good rule of thumb is to create a category for each type of equipment that requires a distinct skill set or maintenance schedule. If two equipment types need the same technician skills and the same service intervals, they can share a category.
