UTM Parameter

A tracking code appended to URLs in social media posts that identifies the source, medium, and campaign in website analytics tools like Google Analytics.

What Is a UTM Parameter?

UTM Parameters are tags added to the end of a URL that pass tracking information to your website analytics platform (such as Google Analytics). When a social media post includes a URL with UTM parameters, any click on that link records where the visitor came from (source), which channel was used (medium), and which campaign drove the visit. Zoho Social can automatically append UTM parameters to links included in posts, enabling accurate attribution of website traffic and conversions from each social channel.

Standard UTM Parameters

The five standard UTM parameters are: utm_source (where the traffic came from, e.g., “facebook”), utm_medium (the marketing channel, e.g., “social”), utm_campaign (the specific campaign name), utm_content (used to differentiate posts within the same campaign), and utm_term (used for paid search keywords). In Zoho Social, you configure a UTM template and the system appends the correct values automatically based on the social profile and post details.

UTM Parameters and Social ROI

Without UTM parameters, website analytics tools cannot accurately attribute traffic from social media, instead lumping it under generic “social” or sometimes “direct” traffic. With proper UTM tagging through Zoho Social, you can see exactly how many website visits, leads, or conversions each social platform, specific post, or campaign generated, enabling true social ROI measurement and data-driven budget allocation across channels.

Can Zoho Social automatically generate UTM parameters for all posts?

Yes. Zoho Social’s UTM settings allow you to configure a UTM template with dynamic variables that automatically populate the correct source, medium, and campaign values for each post based on the social network it is published to. Once configured, all links in your posts will automatically include UTM tracking without you needing to manually add parameters to each URL before posting.

Do UTM parameters affect how a link appears to the post audience?

UTM parameters are added to the URL and visible if a user inspects the link closely, but they do not change the visible anchor text or the destination page content. For aesthetics and link cleanliness, Zoho Social’s integration with URL shorteners like Bit.ly can shorten the UTM-tagged URL into a clean short URL before it appears in the post, hiding the UTM parameters from casual view while retaining the full tracking data in your analytics.
