Engagement Rate

A metric in Zoho Social that measures the percentage of a post's audience that interacted with it through likes, comments, shares, or other actions.

What Is Engagement Rate?

Engagement rate in Zoho Social is a metric that quantifies how much of a post’s reached audience actively interacted with it. It is calculated as the total number of engagements (likes, comments, shares, reactions, saves, clicks) divided by the reach or impressions, expressed as a percentage. A higher engagement rate indicates that the content resonated strongly with the audience, while a low rate suggests the content was seen but did not compel action.

Why Engagement Rate Matters

Raw engagement numbers (total likes or comments) are misleading without context. A post with 1,000 likes on a profile with 100,000 followers (1% engagement rate) may be underperforming compared to a post with 200 likes on a profile with 5,000 followers (4% engagement rate). Zoho Social normalises these numbers into a rate, making cross-post and cross-platform performance comparison fair and meaningful.

Engagement Rate Benchmarks

Average engagement rates vary significantly by platform and industry. Instagram typically has higher engagement rates (1-5%) than LinkedIn (0.5-2%) or Facebook (0.5-1%). Comparing your engagement rate to platform-specific benchmarks helps you understand whether your content is performing above or below expectations for your channel. Zoho Social’s reports show engagement rate trends over time to help you identify whether your content strategy is improving audience interaction.

Does Zoho Social report engagement rate per post or as an average?

Zoho Social reports both post-level engagement rate (for each individual post in the post performance report) and an average engagement rate across a period (in the overview analytics). Both views are useful: post-level data helps you identify your best-performing content, while the period average shows the overall trend in how engaged your audience is with your brand’s social presence.

Which engagement actions count towards the engagement rate in Zoho Social?

The specific actions counted vary by platform. On Facebook, reactions (like, love, haha, etc.), comments, and shares are counted. On Instagram, likes, comments, and saves contribute. On LinkedIn, reactions, comments, and reposts are included. Zoho Social aggregates the engagement actions available from each platform’s API, which may not include all possible interaction types for every platform depending on API access.
