Payment Gateway (Billing)

A third-party payment processing service connected to Zoho Billing that securely handles the authorisation and capture of customer subscription payments.

What Is a Payment Gateway in Zoho Billing?

A payment gateway is the financial infrastructure that Zoho Billing uses to process customer subscription payments. It securely transmits the customer’s payment details to the card network or bank, receives an approval or decline response, and handles the settlement of funds to the business’s bank account. Zoho Billing integrates with multiple payment gateway providers, allowing businesses to choose the gateway best suited to their market and customer base.

Supported Payment Gateways

Zoho Billing integrates with major global and regional payment gateways including Stripe, PayPal, Razorpay (popular in India), PayU, Braintree, Square, and others. Each gateway supports different payment methods (credit cards, debit cards, bank transfers, UPI, wallets), currencies, and countries. For Indian businesses, Razorpay and PayU offer strong support for local payment methods including UPI and net banking alongside card payments.

Payment Gateway and PCI Compliance

Because payment gateways handle sensitive cardholder data, they must be PCI DSS compliant. By processing payments through an integrated gateway rather than handling card data directly, Zoho Billing reduces your business’s PCI compliance scope significantly. The gateway handles the security-sensitive portions of the transaction, and your business only receives a token reference to the customer’s payment method rather than the raw card details.

Can I use multiple payment gateways in Zoho Billing for different markets?

Yes. Zoho Billing supports connecting multiple payment gateways simultaneously, allowing you to route transactions to the appropriate gateway based on the customer’s location or currency. For example, you might use Razorpay for Indian customers (to support UPI and local cards) and Stripe for international customers, with Zoho Billing automatically routing each subscription to the correct gateway.

Does the payment gateway choice affect transaction fees in Zoho Billing?

Yes. Each payment gateway has its own fee structure (typically a percentage of the transaction value plus a fixed amount per transaction). The gateway fees are separate from Zoho Billing’s subscription fees and are charged directly by the gateway provider. Compare gateway fee structures for your expected transaction volume and currency mix to choose the most cost-effective option for your business.
