Auto-renewal in Zoho Billing is the setting that causes a subscription to renew automatically at the end of each billing period. The customer’s stored payment method is charged, a new invoice is generated, and the subscription continues for another cycle without any action required from the customer or admin. Auto-renewal is the default for most SaaS and subscription businesses because it maximises revenue continuity and reduces churn caused by subscription expiry.
With auto-renewal enabled (the default), subscriptions continue indefinitely until cancelled or paused. With auto-renewal disabled, the subscription expires at the end of the current billing period and the customer must take explicit action to renew. Manual renewal is sometimes used for enterprise contracts where purchasing approval is required each year, or for annual plans where customers prefer to consciously recommit rather than be charged automatically.
For annual subscriptions in particular, customers appreciate being notified before an auto-renewal charge. Zoho Billing can be configured to send renewal reminder emails 30, 14, or 7 days before the renewal date. This reduces disputes over unexpected charges and gives customers an opportunity to update payment details, request a plan change, or initiate a cancellation if they no longer need the service.
This depends on your customer portal settings in Zoho Billing. If you enable the auto-renewal toggle in the portal, customers can switch auto-renewal off for their own subscription. If disabled, only admins can control auto-renewal status. Many businesses keep auto-renewal customer-controlled to respect customer autonomy while ensuring clear communication about renewal dates.
India’s Consumer Protection rules and Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines for recurring online payments require businesses to notify customers before auto-renewal charges and in some cases obtain fresh mandate approval for charges above certain thresholds. Zoho Billing’s renewal reminder emails support compliance with notification requirements, but you should verify your specific obligations with a legal advisor for your sector and charge amounts.
