Coupon Duration

The number of billing cycles over which a coupon's discount applies in Zoho Billing, such as once, for a set number of months, or permanently.

What Is Coupon Duration in Zoho Billing?

Coupon duration in Zoho Billing defines how many billing cycles a coupon discount remains active after it is applied to a subscription. The main options are: Once (applies only to the next invoice), Limited (applies for a specified number of billing cycles), and Forever (applies to every invoice for the life of the subscription). Duration determines the total cost of the promotional discount to the business.

Configuring Coupon Duration

When creating a coupon in Zoho Billing, you set the duration alongside the discount amount and type. For promotional campaigns, “Once” or “3 months” durations are common. For special partnerships or grandfathered pricing, “Forever” coupons lock in a discounted rate for the customer permanently. Finance teams should model the revenue impact of forever coupons carefully, as they permanently reduce MRR from those customers.

Coupon Duration and Customer Expectations

Clear communication about when a coupon expires is important for customer satisfaction. Zoho Billing’s automated invoice emails show coupon details, and customers can see their coupon status in the customer portal. Sending a notification when a coupon is about to expire gives customers advance notice that their next invoice will be at the full price, reducing billing surprise and potential support escalations.

Can I extend the duration of a coupon after it has been applied to a subscription?

Coupon durations are typically set at the coupon creation level and applied as configured. To extend a coupon’s duration for a specific subscriber, you would need to remove the expiring coupon and apply a new one with a longer duration. Zoho Billing does not support in-place extension of a coupon’s duration after it has been applied.

What happens to a forever coupon if the customer upgrades their plan?

When a customer with a forever coupon upgrades to a higher plan in Zoho Billing, the coupon behaviour depends on whether it is configured as plan-specific or general. A general percentage coupon will apply to the new, higher plan price. A plan-specific coupon may expire upon the plan change. Review the coupon’s plan restriction settings before upgrading a subscriber with an active discount.
