What Is an Audit Trail in Zoho Sign?

The audit trail in Zoho Sign is a chronological, tamper-evident record of every action taken on a document from creation to completion. It captures: document created, sent to each signatory (with timestamp), email opened, document viewed, each signature applied (with timestamp, IP address, and geolocation), and document completed or declined.

Legal Evidential Value

The audit trail is the primary piece of evidence supporting the legal validity of an electronic signature in a dispute. It proves that a specific person, identified by their email address and IP address, performed a specific action on a specific document at a specific time. Courts and regulators accept well-documented audit trails as evidence of consent.

Audit Trail Certificate

Zoho Sign generates a PDF audit trail certificate that can be downloaded and attached to the signed document for long-term record keeping. Store both the signed document and its audit trail certificate together in your document management system for the full retention period required by applicable law.
