Start-to-Start Dependency

A task dependency type in Zoho Projects where a successor task cannot begin until the predecessor task has started.

What Is Start-to-Start Dependency?

A Start-to-Start (SS) dependency in Zoho Projects means that Task B cannot begin until Task A has started. The tasks may overlap, but B’s start is contingent on A beginning first. For example, testing can begin after development starts, even before development is finished, in a continuous development model.

Practical Applications

SS dependencies are useful for concurrent activities that need to be sequenced but can overlap. Writing documentation can start once design begins. Training preparation can start once the build starts. This type of dependency allows compression of the overall project timeline.

Comparison with FS

FS creates a sequential, non-overlapping relationship. SS allows parallelism while still maintaining a sequence constraint. Using SS dependencies strategically can reduce total project duration compared to a fully sequential plan.
