Task Dependency

A defined relationship between two tasks in Zoho Projects that constrains the order in which tasks can be started or completed.

What Is a Task Dependency?

A task dependency in Zoho Projects defines a relationship where one task cannot start or finish until another task reaches a certain state. Dependencies are critical for realistic project planning because they reflect the real-world sequence constraints of work.

Types of Dependencies

Zoho Projects supports Finish-to-Start (FS), Start-to-Start (SS), Finish-to-Finish (FF), and Start-to-Finish (SF) dependencies. FS is the most common: Task B cannot start until Task A finishes. SS means Task B cannot start until Task A starts.

Impact on Planning

Dependencies drive the critical path calculation in the Gantt chart. Tasks on the critical path have zero float, meaning any delay directly delays the project end date. Identifying and managing critical path dependencies is the core of schedule risk management.
