Home Glossary Zoho Inventory Backorder
Zoho Inventory

Backorder

An unfulfilled portion of a sales order in Zoho Inventory where ordered quantity exceeds available stock, creating a pending obligation to ship later.

What Is a Backorder?

A backorder in Zoho Inventory occurs when a customer orders more quantity than you have available in stock. Rather than cancelling the order, you fulfil what you can immediately and create a backorder for the remaining quantity, to be shipped when stock is replenished.

Handling Backorders

When creating a shipment in Zoho Inventory and the available quantity is insufficient, the system prompts you to either partially fulfil and create a backorder or wait until full stock is available. Backorders remain as open sales orders until fulfilled.

Customer Communication

Proactively communicate backorder status and expected fulfilment dates to customers. Unmanaged backorders damage customer relationships. Zoho Inventory’s integration with Zoho CRM allows your sales team to stay informed about backorder status without switching systems.
