What is a Department in Zoho People?

Departments in Zoho People are the primary way the organisation is structured within the HR system. Every employee is assigned to a department, and this assignment affects their access to certain leave policies, determines which reports they appear in, and controls which HR templates and workflows apply to them.

Department hierarchy

Zoho People supports multi-level department structures. You can create parent departments (e.g., Technology) with child departments beneath them (e.g., Frontend Engineering, Backend Engineering, DevOps). This hierarchy is reflected in the organisation chart and in department-level reporting.

Using departments in HR processes

• Leave policies can be assigned at the department level.
• HR reports can be filtered and grouped by department.
• Approval workflows can route approvals to department heads.
• Custom forms and tabs can be made visible only to specific departments.
