GST E-Invoicing

India's mandatory government system requiring businesses above a revenue threshold to register invoices with the Invoice Registration Portal (IRP) before sending them to customers.

GST e-invoicing is a Government of India mandate under the Goods and Services Tax framework. Businesses above the applicable turnover threshold (currently Rs 5 crore for most categories) must upload each invoice to the Invoice Registration Portal (IRP) before it is delivered to the customer. The IRP validates the invoice, generates an Invoice Reference Number (IRN), and returns a digitally signed QR code that must be printed on the invoice.

In Zoho Books, e-invoicing is configured by connecting the platform to the IRP via API credentials. Once set up, Zoho Books automatically submits invoices to the IRP on generation, retrieves the IRN and QR code, and embeds them into the invoice PDF. The process is invisible to the end user in a properly configured setup.

The threshold and categories subject to e-invoicing have changed multiple times since the mandate was introduced in 2020. Aaxonix configures Zoho Books to comply with the current threshold at the time of implementation and documents what changes are needed if the client grows above the next threshold.
