Bill of Materials (BOM) in NetSuite
A structured list in NetSuite that defines the components, quantities, and routing steps required to manufacture a finished product.
A Bill of Materials (BOM) is the foundation of manufacturing in an ERP system. In NetSuite, a BOM defines the exact components (raw materials, subassemblies, purchased parts) and the quantities of each required to produce one unit of a finished item. BOMs can be multi-level, where a subassembly in one BOM is itself a manufactured item with its own BOM.
NetSuite supports revision-controlled BOMs. Each revision has an effectivity date range, allowing you to change a BOM (substituting a component, changing a quantity) without losing the history of what was used in previous production runs. This is important for traceability, warranty claims, and quality audits.
Work orders are generated against a BOM. NetSuite explodes the BOM to determine component requirements, checks available inventory, and generates material requisitions or purchase orders for shortfalls. Integration with Zoho CRM allows confirmed sales orders to trigger work order creation in NetSuite automatically.
