An HR Administrator can access all employee records, configure leave policies, and approve any request. A Manager can see their direct reports&#8217; data and approve their requests but cannot see other employees&#8217; sensitive information. An Employee can only see their own data through the ESS portal.<\/p>\n<h2>Default roles vs custom roles<\/h2>\n<p>Zoho People comes with default roles (HR Admin, Manager, Employee) that cover most organisations. Custom roles can be created for special requirements \u2014 for example, a Payroll Specialist role that can access compensation data but cannot modify leave policies or employee contracts.<\/p>\n<h2>Role-based access control<\/h2>\n<p>Each role has a permission matrix that controls access at the module level (which modules are visible), the field level (which fields are visible or editable), and the record level (which employees&#8217; records can be accessed).
